Cumana

Spanish flagSituated on the northern coast of the Spanish Main on the banks of the Manzannres river, it is supposedly the oldest European city in the Americas.

Originally, the city was founded because of the rich pearl beds nearby, but as time passed, the settlers began to grow, coffee, sugar, and tobacco for export. Due to the wealth El Castillo de Perlas was built to protect the harbor from attack.

A mile upriver is the infamous Monastery of Santiago de Cumana

The area is also frequently hit by earthquakes, and the city has been re-built more than once.
